To use the NET tool, hover over the very end of a pin (as close as possible, zoom in if you have to), and left-click once to start a wire. Now a green line should be following your mouse cursor around. To terminate the net, left-click on either another pin or a net.

For example, you can set a resistor's resistance, or a capacitor's capacitance. The importance of a part's value depends on what type of component it is. For parts like resistors, capacitors, inductors, etc. the value is a critical piece of information when you're generating a bill of materials or assembly sheet.

How to create Gerbers

Once you are on the page, click on the green 'code' button, and then download the .zip file. In this Instructable, I will be going through the absolute basics of Eagle and how to design and produce a PCB from scratch. Having gone through this process as a beginner myself, I understand how complicated Eagle may seem to be and the number of errors you might run into. As such, I hope this Instructable is able to give you some grounding in using the software and confidence in having your custom PCBs manufactured overseas.

However, for this board, it’s recommended to keep all traces on the bottom layer. If there’s an unwanted or incorrect trace, you can easily remove it using the “RIPUP” command. We’ve intentionally left one connection incomplete to illustrate how nodes are highlighted when you’re placing a trace. The project folder will house both our schematic and board design files (and eventually our gerber files too).

In order to perform any action on a group, you have to select the tool, then hold down CTRL and right-click the group. After you CTRL+right-click, the tool will operate on the group just as it does a single component. As an alternative to show, you can temporarily MOVE a part a part to make sure nets are connected to it. Use MOVE to pick a part up, and the nets connected to it should bend and adjust to remain so. Just make sure you hit ESC to not move the part (or UNDO if you accidentally move it). A part's value allows you to define unique characteristics of that part.

Step 3: Create a New Project & Schematic

If you are using a single-layered PCB, this is especially important as you cannot have tracks crossing over each other. Now that you are happy with your schematic, it is time to convert it into a pcb board. This will enable you to start organizing the placements of each part.

How to use the EAGLE schematic editor

On either side of that is a thin layer of copper, where our electric signals pass through. To insulate and protect the copper layers, we cover them with a thin layer of lacquer-like soldermask, which is what gives the PCB color (green, red, blue, etc.). Finally, to top it all off, we add a layer of ink-like silkscreen, which can add text and logos to the PCB. The board and schematic editors share a few similarities, but, for the most part, they're completely different animals.

At the same time, you also have to make sure not to overlap two different signals. EAGLE forces your parts, traces, and other objects to "snap" to the grid defined in the Size box. If you need finer control, hold down ALT on your keyboard to access the alternate grid, which is defined in the Alt box. In the schematic editor we never even looked at the grid, but in the board editor it becomes much more important. You can adjust the granularity of the grid, by clicking on the GRID icon -- .

Arranging the Board

A 0.05" grid, and 0.005" alternate grid is a good size for this kind of board. Here's one last tip before we get to laying our board out. This is an interface trick that trips a lot of people up.

EAGLE is available from Autodesk either as part of the Fusion 360 software package or you can a free version of just EAGLE here. Grab the version that matches your operating system (the software is available for Windows, Mac and Linux). It's a skill that benefits electronics enthusiasts of every caliber. Through this and a series of tutorials, we'll explain how to design a PCB using EAGLE -- the same software we use to design all of our PCBs.

To move around within an editor window, a mouse with a scroll wheel comes in very handy. You can zoom in and out by rotating the wheel forward and backward. Pressing the wheel down, and moving the mouse allows you to drag the screen around. If you've created library parts that you would like to share with SparkFun to include in our Eagle library, visit this tutorial to see how. And they're constantly updated with new parts we've discovered.

To change the background color, go up to the "Options" menu and select "User interface". This is a subject that's usually glazed over, but it's important to know how to navigate around both of these windows. Included with EAGLE is an impressive list of part libraries, which you can explore in the Control Panel view. There are hundreds of libraries in here, some devoted to specific parts like resistors, or NPN transistors, others are devoted to specific manufacturers. Even if you just want to add a simple through-hole electrolytic capacitor, there are dozens of libraries and parts to sort through to find the right thing.

Note that, in this view, project folders are red and regular folders are the standard yellow. Summit Interconnect is one of the largest PCB manufacturers in North America. At 911EDA, our high-speed PCB design services go beyond achieving fast data processing and optimal signal integrity. We tailor them to your performance needs by integrating vital elements into our designs. We use Altium, Allegro, and PADs PCB software to transition smoothly from schematic designs to final PCB manufacturing. These design tools also provide advanced features for complex PCB design services like rigid-flex and mixed-signal.

If you'd like to follow along with this tutorial, make sure you've installed and setup the EAGLE software. Our How to Install and Setup EAGLE tutorial goes over this process step-by-step, and it also covers the basics of what EAGLE is and what makes it great. It also covers how to download and install the SparkFun EAGLE libraries we'll be using in this tutorial. Definitely read through that tutorial before you continue on. In cases like that, EAGLE will pick one of the two overlapping objects, and ask if that's the one you want.

The CAM Processor allows you to create the data you need to manufacture your PCB. It can produce data for drill stations, photo plotters, Postscript machines and pen plotters. You can easily adapt the CAM Processor to your specific output device because all devices are defined in a user editable device definitions file.

It is now time to pick a manufacturer (most are located in China). The two manufacturers that I have heard most about are SEEED and JLCPCB. When going through this process a while back, I ended up picking SEEED after I compared costs between the two platforms. Proceed to find and click on 'CAM Processor', after which a window such as the one shown above should appear. Under 'Output Type', you will most likely see Gerber X2.
